Siddhartha Mitter & Emmanuel Iduma Receive Arts Writers Grant

We are very excited to announce that two of our professors received 2017 Arts Writers Grants: Siddhartha Mitter (short-form writing) and Emmanuel Iduma (blogs).

Siddhartha Mitter plans a series of features and essays about the contemporary art boom’s effect in Africa. Art scenes are emerging in hub cities across the continent (e.g. Lagos, Abidjan, Accra, Nairobi, Dakar, Johannesburg, Casablanca) thanks to efforts by artists themselves, initiatives by artists resident abroad or recently returned, and nascent classes of local collectors and philanthropists. Mitter will examine this situation through a mix of medium-length features reported in select African sites, and short pieces (including reviews of pertinent exhibitions/events) written from New York.

In the Fall 2017 term of the MFA Art Writing program, Siddhartha has been teaching a course titled “Writing Art & Race."

Emmanuel Iduma's A Sum of Encounters will be a year-long blog featuring intimate portraits of artists based in Nigeria and/or the United States. Each portrait will be developed following studio visits and lengthy conversations, culminating in short narrative essays that elucidate the triangular relationship between artist, artwork, and history.

Emmanuel (Class of 2015) teaches our Writing I practicum.
